Torch earns high awards at state conference

Torch received many awards at the Iowa High School Press Association State Conference today in Iowa City.

For the spring awards given to print editions, Torch won: Class B 2nd place in writing, Class B 1st place in graphics, and Class B 1st place in photography.

Throughout the day Torch reporters also competed against other reporters in “on the spot” contests in photography, copy editing, opinion writing, and news writing. For the photography contest, Hanna Krivit, jr., won 3rd place. In the copy editing contest, Jason Grobstich, so., won 3rd place, and Isabel Neff, jr., and won 2nd place along with Jessie Darland, jr., for Profile. Michael Abramson, so., received an Honorable Mention in opinion writing with his editorial. Amy Brause, jr., won 2nd place in the news competition over her story on the keynote speaker, Aaron Manfull.

    Congratulations to the place winners and all those who put themselves on the spot by competing. Winning two Sweepstakes Awards and finishing second in the other is just about as good a finish as any Iowa HS paper has done. It’s so good to see that the Torch’s flame still burns brightly!
