Symphonic Rock is an annual concert at Kennedy performed by a mix of orchestra and band instruments. This blend creates a concert more unique than any ordinary band or orchestra performance, as it combines both forms of music.
“I think it was going in the early 2000’s. It was started by John Hall and the rock band that he gigged with,” Kennedy Orchestra Teacher Joseph Mnayer said. “I believe a few of those original members are still a part of the band that performs with us each year!”
Freshmen who are new to Kennedy have opinions on the concert. For freshmen, the symphonic rock concert is optional, giving younger students a year to see what the concert is like, and if they’d like to be involved in it.
“As a freshman, I am so excited to finally have the opportunity to perform for my community, as well as play some super fun music,” freshman violin player Addison Bodeker said. “I think it is really interesting how we get to play with an actual rock band, too. I am looking forward to seeing how everything comes together.”
The most unique part of this event is the wide variety of instruments coming together to play music.
“I’m excited about joining symphonic rock because a lot of my friends also do it, so it’s enjoyable to rehearse with people I like playing with,” Freshman bass player Rozlin Fries said. “Additionally, I’m looking forward to performing with the live band during the concert, as I think it’ll be interesting to combine both the Kennedy orchestra and band with professionals.”
Freshmen aren’t the only ones playing, as this is one of the last chances for some of the seniors to have some fun up on stage.
“This is always a fun one, I’m going to miss it,” Senior flute player Holly Larson said.
The Symphonic Rock concert takes place in the Kennedy High School auditorium at 7:00 PM. Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for kids and seniors and free for students with their school ID.
“It’s an opportunity to blend band and orchestra classes with real rock performance. It is quite different from anything students will experience in the classroom and unique to Kennedy,” Mnayer said. “Symphonic Rock is awesome, fun, and just plain rocks! I hope we can get more students to attend and experience what it has to offer, especially when tickets are free with an ID.”
