On Jan. 18, Kennedy High School’s junior varsity show choir, Protégé, took fourth place at Linn-Mar Supernova with the transition from a mixed prep group to a treble group.
Destiny Blegen is a sophomore in Protégé. She experienced the switch from last year’s mixed group to this year’s new treble group.
“Without boys in the group this year, we’ve been able to move at a much faster pace when it comes to learning choreography and music,” Blegen said. “There is a different energy and dynamic with an all-girls group this year. We’re able to focus more easily and really get into the details of our show.”
The show “Dream With Eyes Wide Open” features a dream-sequence theme. The show has five songs and three costume changes, containing the first costume change for Protege in years. LD Kidd choreographed all numbers in the show, and the group is under the direction of Ann Brunson.
“Our vocal blend feels so much stronger with so many similar voices and ranges in the group. There is also such a noticeable boost in our teamwork and support for one another.” Blegen said.
Despite lower numbers than previous years, Blegen believes the group has improved.
“It feels so incredible to see our hard work pay off and to be recognized with higher placements,” Blegen said. “It’s motivating and makes us even more excited to keep pushing ourselves. It’s a huge confidence boost and brings the group even closer together.” Blegen said.
