For around ten years, Kennedy High School students have had the opportunity to participate in job shadowing at no cost. The program exposes students to real-world job environments and help kids understand careers.
These job shadows allow exploring multiple career paths within a chosen field, such as healthcare, business, education, psychology, music and more. Kennedy’s finance teacher, Madison LeClere, is the returning head staff member in charge of helping students apply.
“All area schools who choose to partner with Kirkwood’s Workplace Learning Connection can take advantage of free job shadows for sophomores, juniors, and seniors.“ LeClere said.
This allows students to experience potential career paths by taking these classes before college. It’s a way to transition from high school to your life after graduation. Job shadows help your applications and resumes as well.
“Job shadows can save students a ton of time and money by teaching them what they like and dislike. “ said LeClere.
Kennedy has been the leading high school with job shadowing requests in Cedar Rapids. The amount of students requesting has not wavered over the last few years.
“Over 500 students just at Kennedy who participate in job shadows yearly. This has held pretty steady over the last few years. “ LeClere said.
Job Shadowing is available to eligible students during the school year; available courses can vary based on grade level and interest. Students interested in the program can contact staff and counselors to sign up for a job shadow.
