Kennedy track and field competed at Kingston Tuesday, March 28. Going up against their rivals Jefferson and Washington, Kennedy took first place in over half of the events. 

For boys’ track, Junior Jacob Smetzer placed first with a jump of 21 feet 3 ¾ inches on the varsity long jump event. In the varsity shuttle hurdle relay, senior Tyler Bartels, senior Landon Dougherty, sophomore Ryan Bartels, and junior Cyrus Courtney running a 1:04.77 are now leading the state for the event. 

“It was a lot of kids’ first meet of the season so it was a good practice meet,” said boy’s assistant coach Brain Annis. “There was a lot of learning that happened.”

In girl’s track, senior Grace Braden jumped 5 feet for her first meet of the season, placing first in the high jump. Junior Quren Hullon placed first in both the 100 meter and 200 meter dash with times of 13.39 and 28.36.

“It was great to see all of our athletes put in 100% effort,” girls assistant track coach Sarah Hilby said. 

Junior Alyssa Brandt finished first in the 1500 meter run with a time of 5:22.32. Freshman Kayla Langerman placed first in the long jump with a jump of 15 feet 4 inches. In the field events, Senior Lilea Prahm finished in second for shot put and first in discus.  

“We will always have stuff to improve on and we work on that in practice daily,” Hilby said. 

The next coed track and field meet will be held Saturday, April 8 at Kingston Stadium. Kennedy’s senior recognition will take place after teh 4×200 meter relay.

“Our team did very well on Tuesday, we worked as a team and are very excited to show off our hard work,” Hilby said.
