During the state tournament’s quarter-finals, Kennedy Boys’ Basketball fought hard, coming up with a loss and concluding their season with an overall score of 22-1. The team was recognized for a record-breaking season, going undefeated in the scheduled season for the first time in Kennedy history. Kennedy had six outstanding players receive both recognition in the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) and All-Metro awards as well as being awarded MVC Coach of the Year.

Receiving multiple accolades was senior Colby Dolphin, selected as the Mississippi Valley Division Player of the Year and First Team All-Metro. Senior Kenzie Reed was also selected as All-Metro Player of the Year and First Team All-Conference.

“They complement each other,” Varsity Coach Jon McKowen told the Gazette. “Kenzie can get to the rim as good as anybody, and Colby can space the floor. Their strengths are different, but they need each other to be as successful as they are.”

Four other Cougars were acknowledged in multiple categories each. Sophomore Trey Mckowen and senior Carter Newhouse were selected as Honorable Mentions in both the All-Conference and All-Metro teams. Juniors Cyrus Courtney and Micah Schlaak were both awarded Second Team All-Conference and Second Team All-Metro.

“I am very thankful MVC recognized me,” Schlaak said. “I’m most proud of having an undefeated regular season and strive to improve in the future.”

Point leaders for the team consist of Dolphin with 358, Schlaak with 284 and Reed with 235. Schlaak leads the team in rebounds with 160 while Courtney and Dolphin are ranked second and third with 133 and 55.
