Local news network KCRG is recognizing Kennedy High School junior Micah Schlaak as a candidate for their “Athlete of the Week” award. Schlaak is a member of the basketball team and has showcased his skills constantly throughout the season.

Schlaak is a part of the varsity team and has been playing basketball since he was four years old. He has been a key player for Kennedy, one of the many reasons they are currently ranked first in the state. KCRG recognizes different high school athletes in the area and determines a winner of Athlete of the Week through a poll on the website

“I feel honored that they would consider me as the Athlete of the Week, especially considering how many talented athletes are on my team and in the area,” Schlaak says.

Schlaak adds both height and skill to the team, becoming a valuable asset to Kennedy’s basketball program.

“Micah’s a first-year player on the team and he’s been a great basketball player, he’s a good addition to the team this year,” Head Varsity Coach John McKowen said. “He has a unique ability; he’s tall but he also handles the ball well. He’s a great passer, he’s a great rebounder and a well-rounded player that brings a lot of value to the team.”

Schlaak plans to continue playing basketball for Kennedy High School and hopes to play at a college level. He continues to showcase his skill as a leader and teammate and considers his teammates and coaches as key factors for his nomination.

“I would also like to say that my nomination wouldn’t be possible without my great teammates, coaches and parents who have pushed me to be my best,” Shlaak said.
