On Dec. 8, Kennedy girls’ wrestling won their second meet 39-36. The match took place at Kennedy against Dubuque Hempstead, putting the girls on a winning streak of 2-0.

Wrestlers coached by Craig Mallicoat were led by point leaders freshmen Meredith Kaump and Olivia Hallam, junior Evelyn McDowell and senior Jacie Bedell.

“We have girls like Meredith Kaump…She won the meet for us. She wrestled for 6 minutes and didn’t stop,” Mallicoat said.

This is the first sanctioned girls’ wrestling season in Iowa. Practices started a month ago and their first meet was on Dec. 1.

“These girls have only wrestled for 29 days total,” Mallicoat said. “They do things and they catch on so well, it’s easy to forget how new they are and that they are learning.”

Spectators can see the girls in action at the Kennedy tournament on Monday, Dec. 12 tournament at 5 p.m. against Benton, Jefferson, Dubuque Senior and Iowa City Liberty. Thursday, Dec. 15 marks a dual meet against Waterloo West at 7 p.m. at Kennedy.

“I’m really excited, I’m looking forward to our tournament. They’re super coachable. I just see great things moving forward,” Mallicoat said.
