Every year when October comes around, most students think of Halloween and fall treats, but many forget that October is also breast cancer awareness month. In America, one in eight women develop breast cancer, and one way that Cedar Rapids tries to help the cause is with the Especially for You race.

The race is on Oct. 7, and you can choose between participating in the five-kilometer run, the five-kilometer walk, or the one-mile family walk, and the event ends in Newbo Market. The prices for anyone 15 and under are $20, and admission for adults is $35. Participants are encouraged to wear the color pink to support those diagnosed.

Bailey Wolf, so., has been participating in the event since she was a little kid with her family.

“I always go to the event because people suffer with this diagnosis every day, so I can do something as simple as walking to help them out,” Wolf said.

The money that is raised through the walk goes to free mammograms, breast-care, gynecological services for people who are predicted to be or diagnosed with breast cancer.

This event is a great way to get involved and help with the community. Students at Kennedy, including Kennedy Cheer and the Kennedy Varsity Dance team will be attending to cheer on runners and walkers alike.

Breast cancer is a horrible diagnosis to live with, so come and walk to help the Cedar Rapids community overcome this battle together.
