Pumpkin Spice Gets New Life

Pumpkin Spice Gets New Life

The return of fall can be defined for many in a few signature items. Sweaters, falling leaves, football games, and undoubtedly the return of Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte.

However this year, the classic Pumpkin Spice Latte is getting a reboot.

“After hearing from customers and partners about ingredients, we took another look at this beverage and why we created it so many years ago,” Peter Dukes said, director of Espresso and Brewed Coffee for Starbucks. Dukes discussed in a recent press release on the Starbucks website.

The new revamp includes the elimination of caramel coloring, and the addition of real pumpkin.

Shawn Shaft, sr., is a barista for Starbucks, and sees the Pumpkin Spice craze firsthand.

They’re one in three drinks at our Starbucks,” Shaft said, “We actually ordered maybe one hundred tubs in our one week shipment- one hundred gallon (sized) Pumpkin Spice sauces.”

The new Pumpkin Spice Latte released Sept. 8 in Canada and the U.S.

The popularity of Pumpkin Spice Lattes is evident across the globe. According to the company in 2014  Starbucks sold easily over 200 million Pumpkin Spice Lattes in the first ten years of the drink’s existence.

Carly Carter, jr., is an avid fan of the fall drink.

“In the fall I usually get a lot before school or after school,” Carter said,  “Probably about two a week.”

Carter works at a Hy-Vee that has a Starbucks kiosk inside it, and gets an employee discount on drinks. “I get a lot more Starbucks now than I used to get, which probably isn’t good.”

Carter favors the drink because “it warms your tummy and makes you happy”.
