The Kennedy Varsity Boys Soccer Team kicked off their season on Thursday, April 3 with a game against Waterloo West which ended in a 1-1 tie. The team went 3-12 last season with wins against Jefferson and Western Dubuque. There are 13 returning players from last year’s team.
“It feels amazing to have some of these guys back. I think last year we didn’t play to our full potential, but we were a young team,” sophomore Christian Maybanks said. “This year we have built up our chemistry and progressed as players individually. I’m very glad to be going into this season with these guys again,”
Senior forward Issac Schmidt scored the lone goal for the Cougars in the first half of the game. Louseny Camara recorded an assist in his first varsity soccer game as a freshman. Junior Jason Solis was the starting goalie and had two saves on the night.
The Cougars go on the road to face West Des Moines (WDM) Valley on Saturday, April 12. WDM Valley lead the series against the Cougars 3-1 from 2011 to 2015, this marks the first matchup between Valley and Kennedy in a decade, with Valley currently standing 1-1 on the season.
“We’re ready for the challenge, we have been working hard and with our confidence and determination we believe in our ability to go out there and get the win against Valley,” freshman Bibek Magur said.
