The Kennedy Theatre Department will be holding an addition camp for the spring musical “Hadestown” from March 31 to April 1. Students planning to audition will learn dances with choreographer Alisabeth Von Presley and rehearse music with vocal coaches. The audition itself will be on April 2 with the cast list posted later that day.

Hadestown is a tragic romance that combines jazz, folk, blues and rock to create a unique score. It’s a retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice in a 1920s despression-esque setting. The show was recently released in 2019.

“I love the show, it’s gorgeous,” senior Charlotte Thephravong said. “The music just really hits you in the soul. I am so excited to perform it.”

Kennedy Theatre was under restrictions with the rights for the musical until recently and have been unable to post about or rehearse for the performance. Usually, spring musical auditions are in January and rehearsals start soon after. Because of the delay, the cast will start rehearsals right after the cast list is released and will only have about a month and a half until opening night.

“The fact that it’s at the end of the year is just kind of a lot of pressure,” senior Haile Miller said. “But I know that we can do it. It just means that we have to work harder and have good focus.”

Hadestown will be the last high school musical that this year’s seniors will perform in. The seniors are confident that the cast will be able to get it done even with the time that has been given.

“I just think it might be really stressful at first, but I know that with our crew and hopefully with our cast, that we’ll be able to do it,” Miller said.

As the year is coming to an end, some seniors are realizing that theater might be something they would like to continue pursuing in the future.

“I’m a little upset, but it kind of helped me realize that I want to keep doing this further on,” Thephravong said.
