On Monday, Jan. 20, teachers received notice during professional learning meetings that the Cedar Rapids Community School District (CRCSD) will propose the delay of Freshman Academies and College and Career Readiness Pathways by one year.

After backlash from the community at large regarding the planning and rollout speed of the Academies and Pathways, alterations to the programs and their rollout have been laid out for consideration. Parents are invited to learn more and provide feedback at one of the Pathways Community Meetings on Jan. 30 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at any of the three main high schools—Kennedy, Washington or Jefferson.

“We remain steadfast in our belief that this program will equip our students with the tools they need to graduate future-ready,” CRCSD Superintendent Tawana Grover wrote in an email. “However, we also recognize the importance of ensuring the implementation process reflects the needs and priorities of our students, families, and staff.”

Changes for the Freshman Academy program with respect to freshman seminar and the freshman wings have been proposed. Instead of launching incoming students directly into the first year of Freshman Academies, the Class of 2029 will have the opportunity to participate in an elective freshman seminar course. Next year’s freshmen will continue to take classes with the rest of the high school grade levels and will not move to a single wing of the high school buildings.

“These conversations are focused on gathering input and ensuring staff voices are at the center of this process,” Grover said.

This trial will allow teachers to get a better sense for the freshman seminar course’s strengths and weaknesses. After the trial year, the Class of 2030 will be the first group of freshmen to fully participate in the Freshman Academy. College and Career Readiness Pathways will be rolled out during the 2027-2028 school year using information from the trial year.

“Our goal with these adjustments is to ensure a phased and intentional rollout that meets the needs of all stakeholders,” Grover said. “Input from staff, parents, and the broader community will guide the recommendation that we present to the CRCSD Board of Education.”

Feedback CRCSD leaders receive from teachers and parents on Jan. 30 will direct the rollout plan that will be proposed to the CRCSD Board of Education on Feb. 3. Objections from community members have been recognized and stakeholders now have an opportunity to make their voices heard.

“We want our community to know that we are listening,” Grover said. “Your feedback is essential, and we are committed to making thoughtful adjustments to ensure the program’s success.”
