Girls wrestling on the first day of practice.

History was made on Thursday, Dec. 1, as hundreds of high school students took part in some of the first female wrestling matches across the state. Girls’ wrestling was sanctioned by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union in Feb. 2022 and Kennedy, along with other schools across the state embarked on the inaugural season.

Over 20 students have chosen to participate in this historic season.

“I’m excited, the girls are getting better every day, they work hard, they do everything they possibly can to get better,” head coach Craig Mallicoat said. “I haven’t had this much fun coaching in a long time.”

The Cougars won their match 57-14 over the Liberty Lightning. The girls will be back in action on Thursday, Dec. 8 to take on the Dubuque Hempstead Mustangs in the Cougar Den at 6 p.m.
