After 17 years, Dr. Mary Wilcynski, Kennedy High School principal, has decided to retire from the Cedar Rapids Community School District in June 2013. All staff members assembled in the auditorium yesterday after classes dismissed to hear the unexpected announcement. Shock and sadness filled the room but at the same time staff members were very supportive in Wilcynski’s decision.
Wilcynski has decided to retire because she feels that she is at the right age to still pursue other interests. She went back and forth on her decision for many months and decided that the end of this school year was the best time for her to retire.
“It was a really hard decision because I do love what I do and I think it is better for you to leave before your should than after you should,” Wilcynski said.

I graduated class of 2004 and id have to say she was a great principal! I used to be a really troubled kid but thanks to her and teachers there at Kennedy i graduated with my class when i was almost kicked out of school and i went on getting my certification in nursing and was a CNA until i was diagnosed with cancer. Im now in remission and taking care of my 3 kids ! One of my kids attends kennedy now. Too bad she didnt get to have Mary for principal! Thank you Mary for all you did for me and all the other kids at kennedy❤❤

As a Kennedy graduate (class of ’11) I have to say Dr. W will deeply missed throughout the staff and students. Does anyone have the date for when she retires? I would like to try to come home and give me regards. I’m military so I have to plan ahead to take leave.
