The Kennedy football team was 0-5 heading into their game against Jefferson. You couldn’t tell that as they won the game in dominating style 44-0.
“It’s been a long time coming,” head coach Tim Lewis said. “I’m proud of the kids, when you start the season 0-5 with the expectations that we had going into the season they would have jumped ship but the kids kept on fighting.”
The Cougars didn’t just fight; they dominated the J-hawks holding them to just 47 yards of total offense.
“It’s about time,” senior running back Alex Hillyer said. “Rough start obviously, we had some high expectations coming into the season and we didn’t really come around to that. We feel like we’re really turning around.”
Hillyer ran for 163 yards and three touchdowns for the Cougars.
“It feels great getting that zero off our record,” junior guard Austin Holtzer said. “Our team played together, our offense worked together great and our defense got off the field on third downs.”
If the Cougars want to keep their playoff hopes alive, a win next week against Waterloo East is critical. “We need four wins and we got three more games. We got Waterloo East and they got some talent on their team,” Hillyer said.
“We just got to keep this win and keep it rolling against Waterloo East,” Holtzer said. Kennedy could get into the playoffs with three wins, but that isn’t guaranteed.
