Kennedy High School’s varsity show choir, Happiness Inc., runs its season from November to early March. As this year’s season comes to an end, the group’s overall progress comes into play. Happiness racked up two grand champions, one being Washington and the other Indianola. They also took first runner-up at Prairie.
Happiness has worked with their show, Cats In the Cradle, since August 2024; since then, they have been working multiple times a week in efforts to improve their show. Junior Nathaniel Goff is pleased with the overall results of the season.
“I am extremely happy with how this season went because no matter how much other people doubted us, we held onto the shadow of hope that we could be great,” Goff said.
Liberty’s competition, Storm The Stage, on Mar. 1st, is Happiness’ last competition this year. Happiness is predicted to get 3rd. It is also the last competition ever for this year’s seniors.
“I think Happiness is very capable of placing 2nd at liberty” Senior second year member Maggie Goldberg said. “We have practiced very hard and made necessary changes to the show in order to give our best performance, and while it won’t be an easy accomplishment, it is one I believe is in our grasp if we focus and don’t get ahead of ourselves by assuming our placement.”
At Prairie Premier, Happiness’ backstage crew won ‘Best Crew’ during daytime awards. Head Tech Sonja Woerner says the backstage crew helps performances carry out their best show according to plan.
“Show choir crew isn’t so much about what’s happening during a performance; instead, it’s about what comes before and after,” Woerner said.“We do a lot of planning and set up at competitions as well as outside of them.”
Shows change constantly throughout the year both on stage and behind the scenes.
“I am very pleased with the improvements the group has made. We used to have a very hollow sound, and choreo used to be very hit or miss,” Goldberg said. “Now, however, we are all very confident in our vocal and dancing parts and have a passion for doing what we do and doing it very well.”
