The Girls State Wrestling tournament commenced Feb. 6 at 10 a.m. Five wrestlers from Kennedy qualified for the tournament, juniors Olivia Hallam, Meredith Kaump and Joscelyn Striker and seniors Liz Renshaw and Ella Brown.
Hallam, in the 115 pound class, and Brown, in the 235 pound class, both won their first two matches, moving them into the championship bracket. Kaump, 140 pound class, moved on to the third round of consolation after winning her last match in 1 minute and 45 seconds.
Stricker, in the 190 pound class, made the second round of the consolation bracket, ultimately losing by 6-8, which eliminated her from the rest of the tournament. Renshaw, in the 105 pound class, competed in the first round of the consolation bracket and was also eliminated from the remainder of the tournament by a 0-5 tally.
Brown, Hallam and Kaump are still in the running for medals and will compete again on Feb. 7, day two of the tournament. Matches are from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and spectators can watch the tournament here.
