The Hiawatha Public Library offers a community program that encourages students to participate in various activities such as writing nights, therapy dog nights, programming events, and craft events
These events are designed to engage teenagers and encourage their involvement in the community. The program is intended to use the library’s resources for teens within the Hiawatha community.
Srinidhi Kompella is a Kennedy High School senior involved with the library. She’s part of the student advisory board and encourages students to join and use the resources as much as possible.
“I think that the library is a very important resource that teens often don’t recognize as one they can use,” Kompella said. “The library is a quiet, calm space that fosters an environment for studying, reading, and honestly just existing.”
Teen involvement in public libraries is important because it provides a safe and calming environment for students to study, learn, and explore various skills and topics. Libraries also help students with critical thinking skills, academic performance, and expanding their knowledge.
The library is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends.
