For years, Kennedy’s art program has helped host the district art show, this year at CSPS. The district art show is held in a building within the community each time. This is a great way for everyone to see the hard work put into each art piece presented.
In art class at Kennedy, students put their heart into their artworks to create a beautiful piece for others to see. Most of the art created encourages students to incorporate meaning and personal expression into their illustrations. Each and every piece is unique.
“The art shows are important because it gives everybody a chance to display their artwork and you get to see other people’s stuff that they’re working on,” senior Mckenzie Hitzel said. “I think it helps inspire other people with their own work. It’s just an opportunity to share what you’re working on.”
Artists don’t get many opportunities to share their pieces with their community. The district art show gives them the chance to show everyone what they are capable of.
“They do not get many opportunities for those to see their work always so this is a great chance for them to see what they do matters and see all their hard work out for all to see,” art teacher Amanda Finley said.
The art teachers at Kennedy encourage students to submit a piece of their work for the art show. This helps Kennedy’s community grow and allows teachers to promote their programs.
“Art shows provide an opportunity to bring the community together and see what is relevant and important in the lives of our students,” art teacher Jess Budde said. “Art shows can also show the community why it is essential to support the arts with funding so that young people can continue to learn the skills to express themselves visually.”
The district art shows don’t only present your school’s artwork, but also show other school’s artworks as well. This year’s showcase displayed not only Kennedy’s illustrations, but Washington, Metro and Jefferson’s. This gives students the ability to connect with other schools in their community.
“It definitely brings a lot of the schools together. Art’s always been important for all communities,” Hitzel said. “I feel like involving young people in art is really important. It just helps high schoolers to become involved in the community and other high schools.”
While Kennedy is talented in many activities inside and outside of school, the visual arts is one of the many talents that Kennedy’s students have.
“We have so many talented students here at Kennedy so we open it to all as long as it is original art,” Finley said.
