The Kennedy Boys Basketball Team (22-0) needs to beat North Scott (16-6) on Feb. 27 to continue their undefeated season and win their ticket to state. Their unscathed record has earned them the title of number one in the state and Kennedy’s Varsity Boys Basketball Head Coach Jon McKowen paving the path.

“What I have enjoyed about being ranked #1 is that it shows our kids dedication and approach every day,” McKowen said. When you are a highly ranked team, you get everyone else best shot and we have withstood all of them.”

Kennedy’s team is led by junior Trey McKowen, averaging 13.6 points per game, followed by senior Joseph Bean, averaging 12.4 points per game and senior Micah Schlaak, averaging 10.5 points per game.

“My biggest accomplishment is starting on the best team in the state. And having an undefeated season,” Schlakk said.

This is the boys’ second undefeated regular season, last year losing their streak at the state tournament, however this year they are more optimistic.

“Last year we had an incredible team but we were not as well rounded as we were this year, so that makes it much tougher on opponents,” T. McKowen said. “But no matter the team, we’ve got to come prepared.”

The game against North Scott is at the Alliant Energy Powerhouse at 8 p.m. J. McKowen said he’s ready to take the team all the way.

This team is strong because they push each other every day,” J. McKowen said. “They truly enjoy playing the game of basketball. They also have a competitive maturity and are able to put the team above themselves. They are all great teammates that celebrate each other’s success.”
