On Monday, Oct. 2, an all-campus closure was declared for the Cedar Rapids Community School District. There will be no morning athletics or daycare, however, ELSC workers will report to work as scheduled to receive further instruction.
The closure was reported to all families and staff within CRCSD over phone and email on Sunday, Oct. 1 around 8:30 p.m. It was enacted for the safety of the students and staff due to an unspecified social media threat made against the district. The situation is currently under investigation.
“We have been working with the Cedar Rapids Police Department and their resources with the state public safety agencies and FBI to investigate the situation over the last twenty four hours,” CRCSD Superintendent Tawana Grover said.
For high schools, current block scheduling assignments will remain as is and teachers may assign work to account for the missing school day. Reach out to them over email with any questions or concerns. Parents and staff are advised to watch their email for more information released regarding procedure.
The behavior of students in the district is disrupting the scheduled learning of all students within CRCSD. Kennedy Principal Jason Kline encourages parents to use this unfortunate situation to have a discussion with their children.
“This is an opportune time to discuss this situation with your students and emphasize that such actions have severe consequences, even if the threat is made in jest. Please remind your children about the importance of reporting any suspicious or potentially threatening activity to an adult as soon as possible,” Kline said.
More information regarding, practices, rehearsals and other activities that were scheduled for after school will be sent out by Kennedy’s athletic director Shawn Thompson before 2:00 p.m. on Monday to coaches and advisors. The information will be communicated through them to athletes and any other student affected by the decision.
