This year, Kennedy High School will begin a new math club. It will give students an opportunity to explore different problems involving math, that are not necessarily taught in a regular class.
Any Kennedy student interested in mathematics and logical reasoning is welcome to join the group. This year’s club sponsors will be Kennedy teachers Jill Koch and Joshua Eaten. Junior Sonja Worner and sophomores Malick Sogur and Aanya Tripathi will be leading the club.
“We wanted to start a math club to give students an opportunity to explore different problems that involve math, that are not necessarily taught in a regular class,” Eaten said.
This year, the club plans to prepare for the American Math Competition (AMC) and a mathematical modeling competition later this winter.
“Many students take the AMC every year but rarely have extra time out of school to practice and prepare for it,” Sogur said. “I think this club will help students better prepare for it and potentially qualify for the next round.”
The AMC is the first of a series of competitions that determine the American team for the International Mathematical Olympiad. The selection process takes place over the course of roughly five stages.
“In addition to the AMC, we are planning on competing in local competitions and possibly having tutoring/homework sessions in the future,” Sogur said.
The club will be at the Kennedy Club Fair on Friday, Sept. 15. Sign-up will be available at the table and meetings will occur every Wednesday from 3:00-3:45 p.m. in room 229.
“As we get more organized I feel like Mrs. Koch and I could take more of a backseat approach. We’d hope most of the decisions are coming from the students,” Eaten said.
