Kennedy’s Boys’ Soccer team added another victory to their record of 7-1 on Thursday, April 27. Ranked #1 in the state, the team hoped for a smooth win against Waterloo West.

Senior Carter Newhouse scored the solitary goal for the first half(15:10). The Waterloo West Wahawks took the lead in the second half with a score of 1-2. The Cougars came close with a shot that bounced off the inside top goal bar, and landed centimeters from the scoring line early in the second half, but ended up scoreless for 39 of the 40 minute half. Boys’ Soccer Coach Adrian Evans never lost hope.

“When they decide to play the game their way, I will always believe that they can win,” Evans said.

In the final minute of regulation, junior Kade Popenhagen scored (79:02), forcing a 10 minute overtime. The Wahawks started with the ball in the extra period, but Kennedy got control for the rest of the game—a shift in pace from the second half.

“We just needed the break to calm down and get our mojo back so that we could execute like we know that we can,” Evans said.

The game was quickly closed out by sophomore Alex Miller (05:59/1OT) to complete the two goal comeback.

The Cougars next game is Tuesday, May 2 at home against Dubuque Hempstead who has a 6-5 record. The Mustangs beat the Wahawks 2-0 earlier in the season. Entry tickets are $5 at the southwest gate of Clark Field, at Coe College.
