Food scarcity affects individuals across the state of Iowa. To combat this, the Class of 2021 and National Honor Society are dedicating their senior service project to gathering food for marginalized communities in Cedar Rapids.

The Class of 2021’s goal is to found a food pantry and pre-packaged meal delivery service. Food and funds are from community members and local businesses.

Kennedy High School seniors are partnering with The Academy for Scholastic and Personal Success and the Advocates for Social Justice to better reach marginalized communities.

“Our project this year is essential for those communities still recovering from the effects of the derecho and the lasting effects of the pandemic,” Shefa’a Tawil, National Honor Society officer, said.

Non-perishable food donations can be dropped off at the Cougar Corner Food Pantry in room 56. Make sure you mark donations with ‘NHS’ for organization.

“Yes, we live in Cedar Rapids, a ‘small town,’ but food insecurity is real,” Tawil said. “This project is needed.”
