We may know her as a singer and actress, but another skill of senior Ferin Bergen’s has been brought into light recently — her ability to do makeup.

“I’ve always kind of been interested in makeup since I was little,” Bergen said. “I got really interested in it in middle school.”

In seventh grade, Bergen’s love for makeup grew as she wore winged eyeliner almost everyday.

“It took a lot of practice,” Bergen said. “I would watch YouTube videos in middle school. It was just trial and error until I got it right.”

Bergen now purchases new makeup or utensils at least once a week, and is even considering making tutorial videos herself.

“For me it’s a tool that I use to express myself,” Bergen said.

Last spring Bergen started an Instagram account for her makeup (@ferinmua), and it has gained a lot of attention.

“I wanted to not only track my progress but also be able to show other people the different looks I do,” Bergen said.

As she gained followers on Instagram, her business increased as well. The use of social media has allowed a quicker and more efficient way for people to contact Bergen.

“I love to do makeup every chance I get so the more people that see the makeup I have done, the more opportunities I get,” Bergen said.

Bergen first used her skills on her friends for school dances, which helped more and more people acknowledge her work.

“I decided I should start charging because I use a lot of my own makeup,” Bergen said. “Then I started doing it for people’s senior pictures.”

Bergen has done makeup for photographer Alisabeth Von Presley’s studio, and also served as a make-up artist for various musicals and plays at Kennedy.

Her next career step may not be officially set, but Bergen’s love for makeup will surely stay with her in the future.

“I had a plan for a while to go to California and go to Cinema Makeup School, but that might change,” Bergen said.

Her advice for those who want to learn how to do makeup is to practice as much as possible, because that’s the only way to get better.

“I like that people can wear it however they want to wear it and there’s no rules with it,” Bergen said.
