Starting on May 24 Kennedy girls varsity softball players have their very first game of the season. Practice officially started May 5 about a month before their first game.

“Practice starts on May 5 and then ends somewhere in July depending on how well you’re doing, which of course we want to do well,” Laura Nus, fr., said.

Softball players on the Kennedy team have many different views about their team’s atmosphere.

“I don’t like wasting my summer. Every day you have to get up at 8  for practice and you can’t really do stuff with your friends, but at least you have friends at softball, so that’s good,” Kaelyn Ryan, fr., said.

An estimated 30 girls go out for the girls’ softball team at Kennedy and play throughout the entire summer.

“I chose to go out for softball because it is fun and you hang out with your friends all summer. Overall softball just has a lot of energy with it,” Nus said.

Multiple freshmen were moved up to play on the varsity team this year, which doesn’t happen often.

“It’s a really good experience for the lowerclassmen, they learn a lot from being with older girls. In general it’s a good experience and will make them better in the future”, Ryan said.

Outdoor sport as different then indoor sports in many ways. When playing softball the players have to take this in consideration.

“The worst thing is wearing pants during the summer. I am trying to get a tan and I can’t get a tan in pants. Also it’s super-hot and it makes you sweat a ton,” Nus said.

Players on the team can agree that attitude and effort are a big part of playing softball.

 “When you’re in the middle of the game and the energy is down it’s not good for the coaches or the players. If you don’t have a positive attitude then everyone’s going to be down and practice is going to be horrible,” Ryan said.

Each player has expectations and goals to set for the rest of the season.

“Our main goal is to win. It’s very upbeat and our coaches encourage us a lot. There’s never a negative, like when there’s softball practice your like, yeah lets go it’s going to be fun,” Nus said.
